Length: 7.1 miles

Difficulty: Easy

Elevation Gain: 5,490 to 6,200 feet

Estimated Time: 4 hours

Location: Just north of Eldorado Canyon State Park

The Big Blue Stem / South Boulder Creek loop hike can be accessed from the South Boulder Creek Trailhead off of Highway 93 or from the South Mesa Trailhead off of Eldorado Springs Drive. The loop heads up through the beautiful meadows on its way towards the base of the Flatirons. As you gain in elevation and get closer to the Flatirons the grassy meadows give way to ponderosa pine forests. In the spring, you'll often be walking among newly born calves as local ranchers are able to put their herds to pasture in this area. After 2.3 miles if you decide that you are getting tired you can cut off and take the short loop back to the trailhead. If you are feeling strong continue up into the foothills to the Mesa Trail for an additional 3 mile loop.
