The Royal Arch Trail begins at the Ranger Station in Chautauqua Park and heads up the closed access road, which skirts the open grassy meadows of the lower foothills. After a quick drop into a gulch the trail climbs steadily through coniferous forests to a sandstone arch. Although not as big as most arches in southern Utah, Royal Arch is quite an impressive sight, especially with the City of Boulder as a backdrop. The view from the arch is quite impressive. You can look down on Boulder or across to the Third Flatiron, a popular ascent for many Boulder climbers. Keep an eye out for raptors that nest in this region during the spring.
